Predictions on How the COVID-19 Will Affect College Admissions

With the SAT and ACT exams canceled until further notice, most schools worldwide going online, and many countries on quarantine, there have been speculations on how this situation will affect this year’s college admissions cycle. While no one knows for sure what will happen, we can use some universities’ current actions as a basis for how they may act in the near future.

  1. Extended Deadlines

It is likely that universities will extend application submission deadlines, especially for Early Decision and Early Action. They may also be more flexible when it comes to sending standardized testing scores (eg. they might accept scores after the submission of applications).

  2. More Flexible Policies

With many universities having already gone test-option, it is likely that many others will follow this trend this year. For instance, BU has recently announced it will go test-optional (click here to read more about it). Moreover, some universities are now accepting the online Duolingo English Test instead of the TOEFL or IELTS. However, if you are still able to take the traditionally-accepted exams, do so!

  3. Increased Weight on School Grades

Due to the increased testing flexibility, there will probably also be an increased weight on GPA and school grades, especially of earlier years. So for now, we are recommending our students to focus on schoolwork until further notice. Moreover, if you are an IB student, try to get ahead on your IA’s and Extended Essays.

  4. More Students Taking “Gap Year”

While taking a break between high school and college has been practiced by many students in the past, this will likely increase this year, especially among international students. This means that, perhaps, admissions will be less competitive this year.

  5. Don’t Neglect Extracurricular Activities

Continuing with extracurricular activities has been challenging. Therefore, the students who will especially stand out are those who were able to quickly adapt their activities during this time instead of abandoning them. Of course, if you are the captain of the soccer team, it is impossible to continue practicing. However, take initiatives to catch up with your team members online, or host an online workout session. If are involved in a charity or NGO, figure out ways in which you can contribute from home. It is time to get creative!

For now, these are our main predictions. Of course, everyone has been working on a day-to-day basis during these uncertain times, so keep posted for more news!
