How to Get Off a College Waitlist

You get the results of all colleges you applied to, and you got waitlisted at you dream school. What does this mean, and what do you do now?

If you're waitlisted at a university, it usually means that you are a competitive candidate, and if spots open up, one of them might go to you.

"This waitlist decision is one saying that you're competitive in our pool, and if spots open up after the May 1 candidates' reply date, we're going to go back and take a look at your application and the other students' applications on the waitlist," says Eric J. Furda, dean of admissions at the University of Pennsylvania.

So if you're waitlisted at a school that you really want to go to, follow the following steps:

1. Accept your spot on the waitlist

2. Register at another university you have already been accepted to

"Even if you accept a spot, make sure you secure a place for yourself at another university or college that you’re enthusiastic about and that has extended an offer of admission. Make the necessary enrollment response to ensure you're part of their fall freshman class," says Sally Lindsley, Senior Associate Director of the Office of Undergraduate Admissions at the University of Michigan.

3. Re-express interest in the college

Send a concise e-mail to the office of admissions at the university, re-expressing your interest in that university and/or program. However, only say it is your number 1 choice, if that really is the case.

4. See if there is any additional information and/or material

Maybe you got a great exam result, or got an amazing job for the summer. Let the university know about that!

5. Do NOT stalk

Only say and send information that will add something to your application. Stalking admissions officers will only hurt your chances of getting off the waitlist.

6. Have patience!

You will only be admitted from the waitlist if spots open up. That may take some time to happen and for the university reevaluate your application. Therefore, have patience, and if you DO get off the waitlist, make sure you accept the offer!
